The airport at Marsh Harbour (MHH) in the Abacos Island Chain of the Bahamas is only about 45 to 60 minutes flying time from any major city on Florida's East Coast, such as Palm Beach, Ft. Lauderdale, Miami, or Jacksonville. Some smaller airlines fly from Daytona Beach, St. Augustine, or from near Orlando (Sanford airport).  
Once in Marsh Harbour, the remainder of the trip is by boat to Great Guana Cay, which is a 30 minute ride (unless you are renting a boat). See the information below. This trip is a lovely view of the sparkling water. From the Marsh Harbour airport, the many taxis will take you to the ferry dock near Mango's Restaurant, or to any shopping you desire (or to a boat rental if you are renting). They know any place you might need to go. (Note: Don't worry if the Guana ferry stops first at Scotland Cay.) (Note: Don't be confused if you see the Albury Ferry dropping off passengers in different places. The ferry officially leaves only from one place between Mango's Restaurant and Curly Tails restaurant at the "Conch Inn."). Weather Forecasts for the Bahamas (click here) You will want to check in or coordinate with ORCHID BAY MARINA on Great Guana Cay -- which is the office for the Orchid Bay community. Orchid Bay's staff can meet you at the ferry dock with our golf cart and/or golf carts you rent. They are open 7 days a week, but may close early on weekends especially in the off-season. We will tell them to expect your arrival and to ensure pristine condition with cleaning staff. But you should also contact them in advance to plan your arrival. Furthermore, the local Bahamian staff knows everything there is to know about the Abacos and are invaluable for assisting you with any needs, plans, recreational ideas, you-name-it. You may pay Orchid Bay by credit card when you arrive on the island, although your rental will not be reserved without payment in advance. You may pay in advance by credit card form to us directly by Fax or by check or by bank deposit at the nearest WACHOVIA branch or by calling in your credit card to Orchid Bay directly. If you arrive by boat, raise Orchid Bay on VHF 16. If you either rent a boat when you arrive in Marsh Harbour or travel to the Bahamas by boat, you may unload your luggage or supplies directly on to the house's small dock behind the house. However, the small dock is not an all-weather dock, and a slip at the Marina for your boat is recommended. Orchid Bay staff will want to run up to the house and meet you at the dock, in order to open the house for you and make sure you find the house from the water. For those outside of Florida, you will probably fly first to one of the major Florida cities below, then change planes to Marsh Harbour on a separate leg. US Airways and American Airlines book tickets direct to Marsh Harbour (MHH) but the final leg is on Bahamas Air or American Eagle. Bahamas Air also can schedule a trip directly from many American cities that may surprise you, changing in Florida. You may also fly direct on Continental from around the USA. For those already in Florida, flights to Marsh Harbour are simple and inexpensive. Bahamas Air can be as little as $280 per person, round trip. Of course, flights connecting to Marsh Harbour from Nassau or Freeport are easy through many of the smaller, regional island airlines. A combination visit to the busier, noisier cities followed by a restful stay in the beauty of the Abacos may be just the plan for many people. Arrival in Marsh Harbour in the morning or early in the afternoon is recommended since the last ferry leaves Marsh Harbour at 5:30 PM (on the schedule as it currently exists when this is being written) and at 3:30 PM during off-season periods in the late Summer and early Fall. However, charter boats on any schedule can be arranged either through Albury Ferry or through Orchid Bay. Some flights are scheduled to arrive at Treasure Cay (TCB) nearby Marsh Harbour 37 kilometers away. Unless the flight goes on to Marsh Harbour (many do), landing at Treasure Cay will involve either taking a taxi to the ferry dock in Marsh Harbour or taking a ferry or arranging a boat from Treasure Cay. The taxi ride between airports is quite long and may cost $70, so it is better to fly directly into Marsh Harbour or take a boat directly from Treasure Cay to Great Guana Cay. A second ferry company has been started that leaves from Treasure Cay. Although the Bahamas have functioned for years like a 51st State of the USA, in terms of its warm welcome to Americans and informal access, rules after 9/11 now require a passport to enter the United States. Also, Americans must show a return airplane ticket scheduled back to the U.S.A.
